The Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA) is a multi-stakeholder initiative focused on building a prosperous organic cotton sector which benefits everyone—from farmer to consumer. Our aim is to build a fair, robust organic cotton market with appropriate integrity at every relevant level, whilst growing supply and demand.

Environmental impact reduction potential

Why organic cotton?

THE 'GOLD STANDARD' FOR SUSTAINABLE COTTON PRODUCTION

Organic cotton has been described by the sector as the 'gold standard' for sustainability. Under the right conditions, organic cotton production delivers impressive environmental, social and health benefits, promotes responsible business practices, and builds prosperity. Therefore, organic cotton offers a clear opportunity for leaders in sustainability and can offer great value for both brands and customers.

CHALLENGES OF THE ORGANIC COTTON SECTOR

The lack of transparency and limited means for traceability in the cotton supply chain lead to decreased product integrity. Additionally, farmers have no incentive to switch to organic production due to, for example, limited technical knowledge, lack of access to quality organic seeds and limited access to finance.

Although much has already been done by the sector to tackle sustainability issues, the next step to accelerate sustainability and tackle root causes of the sector’s problems is to collaborate and coordinate these efforts to build a prosperous organic cotton sector.

What oca will do

ALIGNING THE SECTOR TO ENABLE A VIABLE BUSINESS CASE FOR ORGANIC COTTON

In 2016 OCA entered a two-year prototyping phase. In the prototyping phase OCA will demonstrate and enable a viable business case for organic cotton, both for producers and the industry, by understanding and improving essential conditions.

In this prototyping phase, OCA will:

  • Build a strong platform to convene the sector around a shared strategy and goals;
  • Increase integrity and efficiency by promoting and facilitating supply chain integration;
  • Increase transparency and integrity by introducing a traceability system;
  • Strengthen the business case of the farmer, providing access to quality organic seeds, training & organization, and finance.

During the prototyping phase, NewForesight [link: www.newforesight.com] will act as the OCA secretariat and further shape and formalize the strategy, structure, and activities. Additionally, we will explore the feasibility of other interventions to grow organic cotton supply and demand. Ultimately, the interventions are intended to be scalable and replicable in other relevant regions.

Who's involved

COLLABORATION IN A PRE-COMPETITIVE SPACE

OCA’s founding partners
OCA was founded in 2014. Its founding members are C&A, C&A Foundation, H&M, EILEEN FISHER, Kering, CottonConnect, Textile Exchange and Inditex.

As a multi-stakeholder initiative, we will collaborate with stakeholders through the entire value chain. We identify front-running organizations and preferred partners, and work with selected partners on specific pre-competitive action agendas and deliverables. We will continue our collaborative and inclusive dialogue with organizations joining us from all parts of the supply chain. Together we will grow the future of organic cotton.
