It is a great pleasure to present to you the first annual report of the OCA Foundation. We can look back on a year full of key milestones for OCA: setting up the foundation, growing our partner base, and taking the crucial step from analysis to action.
2016 in short
In the past year, OCA has translated this mission into tangible action. To improve the business case for smallholder farmers and optimise the impact of organic farming practices we launched a sourcing pilot in India. To address the lack of high performing organic seed, we partnered with the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) to develop an extensive seed breeding programme and to tackle the issue of poor transparency and traceability in the sector, we partnered with Textile Exchange and GOTS to advice on the development of a traceability tool. At the same time, we formalised OCA as an independent foundation in 2016 and diversified our funding base, ensuring OCA’s longer-term sustainability. And we are proud to announce that we have welcomed new members to OCA, including Inditex, KappAhl, Tchibo, PAN-UK and Pratibha Syntex.
Looking forward to 2017
2017 is already turning out to be an exciting year of firsts. Our first cotton will be sourced through our pilot program and we started our seed breeding project. Soon we can proof the impact of our interventions, learn from them, and start to adapt and scale. 2017 will be a momentous year for OCA and the organic cotton sector at large as we will kick-start a joint movement to unlock the potential of the sector together with key sector stakeholders.
